How I Reluctantly Fell in Love With a Mattress Topper

Sleep is one of my favorite things. As I’ve gotten older, it’s only become more important to me and my health, so when something disrupts my sleep, like an aggressively snoring spouse or a midnight cat scuffle, I am not a happy camper the next day.

I tend to be a light sleeper, so I’m pretty particular about my sleep hygiene and environment. I use a silk sleep mask that blocks out all light, yet still allows me to sleep on my side without waking up to the dreaded pillow face. If I’m having trouble dozing off, I enjoy listening to my ASMR playlist. However, the surface I sleep on is perhaps the most important element. And that’s where my mattress topper journey comes into play.

We have a queen-size Keetsa Pillowtop Mattress, which has treated us exceptionally well over the 10years we’ve had it. It’s the Goldilocks of mattresses — not too soft or too firm. It somehow perfectly aligns with my husband's and my sleeping habits (he sleeps like a rock while I’m a tosser). Considering how satisfied we’ve been with our mattress, I was rather reluctant to add a mattress topper over it, but alas, that’s the life of a product-testing editor. So we dubiously welcomed Brooklyn Bedding’s 3” latex mattress topper into our bedroom.

I’d always assumed a mattress topper was for sub-par mattresses to help them feel more comfortable. However, I’ve learned that a mattress topper can enhance any mattress, adding firmness or more contouring where your mattress lacks it.

I suppose I’d gone somewhat sleep blind to the dips in our trusty mattress, because after we installed it, there was an instant, noticeable difference in comfort and support.

First, the pad is incredibly cushy. It made our mattress feel like a luxurious hotel bed in the best possible way. When I get into bed, the 3” latex foam gently hugs my body on all sides, but not to the point where I feel like I’m sinking. It’s just enough to feel comforting. Paired with our mattress, the topper offers medium-firm support. My husband, who typically prefers firmer support for back sleeping, was shocked by how well he slept on the topper. I love how the soft latex has just the right amount of give to cradle me when I sleep on my side (which I often do), but then snaps back into place when I switch to lying on my back. Essentially, it gives the pressure relief of memory foam without the slow rebound of that material.
The topper is made from 100% latex, which tends to be more breathable than other mattress topper materials, such as memory foam.

It can even help regulate temperature; a nice plus if you or your partner are hot sleepers.

All of that being said, there are still some things that could be improved. It’s a lofty topper, and makes our already tall bed look a bit Princess and the Pea-ish. We have an arthritic cat who loves to be on the bed, and we’ve noticed her struggling to pull herself up onto it lately, so we’ve had to install a footstool to give her a boost. The topper also hangs over the edges a bit, making the mattress look top-heavy. Still, the comfort it adds outweighs these negatives.

I didn’t expect to like this topper—let alone love it—and I went into this test with a plan to move it to our guest bedroom after trying it out. It really surprised both my husband and me, though, and has made our bed such a cozy sanctuary that I’ve found myself lingering on it for work days far longer than I should. It’s a little luxury that I didn’t ask for, but that I’m glad arrived on my doorstep.
