Use of this strain has been shown to reduce vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and stool frequency in people with IBS. It may also relieve symptoms like gas and bloating in adults.

I've dealt with heartburn for over a decade. Despite taking a prescription medication daily to manage it, I still sometimes get breakthrough heartburn after eating greasy or spicy foods. I was pleasantly surprised by how effective the Enzymedica DGL Stomach Soothe Gummies were for preventing heartburn with heavy meals.

These gummies contain 400 mg of deglycyrrhizinated licorice extract (DGL). Studies show that DGL may help ease heartburn by increasing mucus production, thereby protecting your esophagus from stomach acid irritation. It's thought that the saponins and flavonoids (two types of plant compounds) are responsible for this effect. It's typically recommended to use DGL instead of regular licorice, as eating too much regular licorice may lead to high blood pressure and low potassium levels.

These gummies are free from several major allergens and are vegan-friendly. They also contain only 1 g of added sugar per serving, making them a good choice if you're watching your sugar. They're also third-party tested to ensure purity and potency.

I wish the gummies had a stronger licorice flavor. But given that so many people don't enjoy that flavor, I can understand why they went with German Chocolate instead. That said, these still taste better than other popular heartburn remedies, like Tums and Gaviscon.

The gummies I received were stuck together in the bottle, although this could have been due to improper storage or transportation.

 One thing to keep in mind: A full serving is six gummies and includes 6 g of added sugar.
Llama Naturals Kids Multivitamin Gummies offer 13 vitamins (including A, C, D, E, K1, and eight B vitamins) with just 2 g of added sugar from organic fruit. The formula uses methylated B vitamins, which may support better absorption.

They’re free from major allergens and are third-party tested for contaminants. However, they don’t include magnesium, calcium, or iron.

How We Chose the Best Gummy Vitamins

To choose the best gummy vitamins, I consulted with five other dietitians to ask which gummy vitamins they recommend to their clients:

Manaker and Hardy also provided some additional information about who may benefit from a gummy vitamin, the effectiveness and safety of gummy vitamins, and the downsides of taking a gummy vitamin.

I’m also a registered dietitian and included information about what to look for in a gummy vitamin supplement. I also prioritized supplements that were third-party tested to ensure that the supplements’ nutritional content matches what’s on the label.  Finally, I personally tested several of these brands to offer my own perspective on factors such as texture, flavor, and effectiveness.

What to Look For When Buying Gummy Vitamins

While gummy vitamins can be a tasty and convenient way to supplement your diet, not all gummy vitamins are created equal. Here are a few key factors to consider when shopping for gummy vitamins:

  • Ingredient List Check for common allergens (like gluten) or animal-based ingredients (like gelatin) if you’re vegetarian or vegan.
  • Nutrient Amounts Ensure the product you choose contains meaningful amounts of the vitamins and minerals you need without megadosing (unless recommended by your health or medical provider).
  • Added Sugars Some gummies can contain several grams of sugar per gummy. If you’re concerned about cavities or blood sugar levels, consider choosing a low-sugar (2 g or less per serving) or sugar-free option.
  • Third-Party Testing Look for third-party testing or certifications like NSF or USP to ensure quality and ingredient accuracy.
  • Price per Serving Some gummy vitamins are pricier than tablets. Consider the cost per gummy to make sure they fit into your budget.
  • Shelf Life and Storage Gummies can degrade faster than pills, especially in the heat and humidity. Ensure they’ve been stored in a cool, dry place to prevent degradation.

What Are the Downsides of Gummy Vitamins?

While gummy vitamins can be a great choice for many people, there are some downsides to be aware of. “Gummy vitamins often contain added sugars,” says Hardy, ”which can contribute to cavities and potential gum inflammation.” They may also lack certain nutrients like iron, calcium, and magnesium.

In addition, gummy vitamins can break down more quickly than other vitamin forms, which can cause product manufacturers to include an excess of vitamins and minerals in anticipation of degradation, says Hardy. In fact, per ConsumerLab.com, the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) allows gummies to contain up to 245 percent of the listed amount of folate and up to 250 percent of the listed amount of vitamin C.

Finally, Hardy cautions that children can mistake gummy vitamins for candy, so if there are kids in the house, it’s recommended to keep gummies (and all other medications) out of reach.

Who might benefit most from gummy vitamins?
“Gummy vitamins can be helpful for individuals who have trouble swallowing pills,” says Hardy, “such as children or older adults.” People who prefer a tastier way to take their supplements may also prefer gummy vitamins, she says.
Gummy vitamins can be just as effective as pills or capsules, provided they contain the recommended dosages of nutrients, says Manaker. However, their nutritional content can vary based on the brand and formulation, she says. Check the label for specific information about which nutrients are present in the vitamin.
Some nutrients, such as iron, can affect the taste and texture of gummy vitamins, says Manaker. “This makes it challenging to include them without compromising the overall quality and palatability of the gummies,” she says.
“Gummy vitamins can be safe for kids,” says Manaker, “but caregivers need to be extra careful, especially with supplements that contain certain nutrients like iron.” She notes that if a child takes too many gummies, it can lead to serious consequences, including potential toxicity.
