5 Ways Pumpkin Benefits Your Gut Health

Below are five ways that eating pumpkin regularly can help improve gut health.
1. Pumpkin Supports Bowel Regularity
Soluble fiber is unique in that it can improve both constipation and diarrhea, making stool more comfortable to pass, says Danielle Gaffen, RDN, the San Diego–based founder of Eat Well Crohn’s Colitis, through which she provides personalized nutrition counseling for people living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other digestive conditions. Pumpkin “absorbs water and forms a gellike consistency in the digestive tract, which can help normalize stool consistency,” Gaffen says.
Beyond magnesium, pumpkin seeds also provide plant-based protein, unsaturated fat, iron, and zinc, making them a nutrient-dense snack or meal topping, Gaffen says.

For this reason, low potassium levels can lead to constipation as peristalsis weakens. “Because the digestive tract relies on coordinated nerve and muscle activity to move food through the intestines, potassium is important for normal digestive function,” Gaffen says.

Pumpkin seeds, on the other hand, are an excellent source of zinc, which supports immune function, tissue repair, and the proteins that help hold intestinal cells together, Gaffen says.

“Because gut microbes vary in which carbohydrates they can break down, eating a broader range of plants may support a wider range of microbial functions,” she says.
Pumpkin is a practical but often overlooked way to add another plant into the rotation, Gaffen says. If you don’t want to buy and cook a whole pumpkin, 100 percent canned pumpkin is available year-round, has a long shelf life, and provides similar fiber and nutritional benefits as cooked, fresh pumpkin, she says. It can be easily incorporated into other plant-based dishes, savory or sweet. “It can be added to oatmeal, yogurt, smoothies, soups, sauces, or baked goods,” she says.
When blended, mashed, or cooked until fork-tender, it’s also gentle enough for people with digestive conditions like IBD. “People with IBD don’t need to avoid pumpkin simply because of their diagnosis. During periods of increased symptoms, soft, peeled, well-cooked pumpkin may be easier to tolerate,” she says. Start with a smaller portion and increase gradually to help identify your tolerated amount, Gaffen says.
